In late 2003, the biosciences community was horrified by a proposal from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) in a consultation paper on the future funding method for teaching, to split the price band B for science, engineering and technology subjects into two sub-groups. All bioscience disciplines would be in the B2 sub-group, which would have its resource rate cut by 7.4%, while those in B1 would see an increase of 15.7%.
