A recent report entitled ‘The Freedom to Succeed’ has been published by the Academy of Medical Sciences. It presents the findings and recommendations of a committee, chaired by Professor Keith Gull CBE FRS FMedSci (an ex-Chairman of the Biochemical Society), that reviewed research fellowships in the biomedical sciences. In this article, Professor Gull outlines some aspects of this report, which has broad implications for fellows, funding agencies and higher education institutes.
