This Biochemical Society sponsored event, that took place from 20 to 22 November 2023, was organized by first-year PhD students from EMBL sites across Europe. The event gathered 160 participants from 25 countries to explore the impact of collective behaviour in various biological realms, from molecular interactions to ecological systems.
The 25th EMBL PhD Symposium: ‘Power of Many – Collective Behaviour across Scales’
The symposium spanned five sessions covering molecular interactions, cellular behaviour, multicellular systems, eco-evolutionary dynamics and integration of scales. Renowned speakers showcased cutting-edge research, delving into topics like single-cell genomics, developmental impacts of gene alterations, epigenomics in cancer, cell movement regulation and mechanisms of ageing in oocytes. Parallel sessions offered tours, seminars on open science and AI for imaging analysis and discussions on sustainable science.
A panel on ‘Sustainable Science’ addressed sustainability challenges in academia, featuring anecdotes from experts striving to make labs and scientific environments more sustainable. Jules van der Walt received the poster prize, while travel grants were awarded to several participants. The symposium, supported by the Biochemical Society, fostered networking through poster sessions, coffee breaks, a farewell party and interactive activities.
