25–27 September 2024, Newcastle upon Tyne

The Transcription and Chromatin UK meeting in Newcastle brought together leading researchers to explore the dynamic fields of gene expression and chromatin biology. One of the key points of interest discussed was the intricate relationship between genome organisation, chromatin structure, and transcriptional regulation.

The new exciting research included studies on the oncogenic gene repression by the polycomb complexes in diffuse midline glioma, regulation of tRNA gene expression, mechanisms of enhancer–promoter communication, and the expanding roles of transposable elements and mechanisms of their silencing. The conference also highlighted several new exciting technologies: a method for simultaneous profiling of chromatin states and DNA double-strand breaks and cryoEM analysis of native RNA polymerase complexes.

The conference featured an inspiring talk by a patient advocate. Their personal story added a sense of purpose and urgency to the work being done, reigniting empathy and motivation in the audience to continue advancing towards better patient care and outcomes.

The event received generous support from the Biochemical Society, whose dedication to promoting scientific dialogue was crucial in uniting this dynamic community of researchers. In summary, the meeting was a significant stride forward in enhancing our comprehension of transcription and chromatin biology.
