December 4-6, 2024, EMBL Heidelberg, Germany

The 26th EMBL PhD Symposium, themed Biology Outside the Box, brought together 120 participants at EMBL Heidelberg and 61 online attendees to explore innovative approaches to molecular biology. Organized by PhD students from all six EMBL sites and sponsored by the Biochemical Society, the event was subdivided into four sessions: Beyond Conventional Methods introduced cutting-edge technologies to accelerate research and solve long-standing questions; Beyond Model Organisms showcased the use of non-traditional organisms to address gaps in knowledge about development and evolution; Beyond the Dogma celebrated research that challenged established beliefs and encouraged rethinking traditional concepts; and Beyond Earth explored how studying biology in unconventional environments, such as space or the deep sea, could lead to groundbreaking discoveries.

The program featured 12 internationally renowned speakers who presented pioneering research alongside students who showcased their work during flash talks and poster sessions. These presentations allowed emerging scientists to share their contributions and engage directly with experts, fostering meaningful discussions and collaboration. Networking activities, such as the “Meet the Speaker” sessions during coffee breaks, created a relaxed environment for attendees to connect, exchange ideas, and build professional relationships.

Interactive workshops expanded the symposium’s scope, offering hands-on experiences encouraging creativity and innovation. A session on modern science communication included formats such as memes, sparking lively discussions about engaging with diverse audiences. Another highlight was the Foldscope workshop, led by its inventor, which gave participants a unique opportunity to explore the potential of foldable microscopes.

Social events, including a science pub quiz and a vibrant party featuring the EMBL DJ club and the band AAA, complemented the scientific sessions by providing informal spaces for attendees to connect and relax. Shared meals throughout the symposium encouraged networking and interaction among students, researchers, and industry representatives.

The symposium successfully brought together a diverse group of scientists to share knowledge, inspire new ideas, and strengthen connections within the molecular biology community. We thank the Biochemical Society for its support and look forward to future collaborations.
