Human zinc-α2-glycoprotein (ZAG) is a 42 kDa adipokine which regulates body fat mass and is associated with cachexia and obesity. In this issue Lau and colleagues (pp. 2815–2834) demonstrate an augmented mechanism for fatty acid binding in ZAG that is distinct from other known fatty acid binding proteins. On the cover co-crystallisation of the fat depleting factor ZAG (blue) with a lipid (white) reveals the presence of beta barrel tetramers which increase the lipid binding capacity of ZAG.
