UKRI and Open Access:  please note that as UKRI are yet to announce their new open access policy, information provided by the Journal Checker Tool (beta version) regarding the UKRI policy may not be correct. UKRI-funded researchers should follow existing RCUK rules (including payment of hybrid APCs, if relevant) for open access compliance until at least 1 January 2022.

Highlighting rigorous work that explores molecular mechanisms underpinning key biological processes, the Biochemical Journal is a single-blind peer-reviewed leading bioscience journal publishing high-impact scientific research papers and reviews on the latest advances and mechanistic concepts in the fields of biochemistry, cellular biosciences and molecular biology.

The Journal and its international Editorial Board, led by Professor Mark Lemmon (Yale University School of Medicine, USA), are committed to publishing work that significantly advances current mechanistic understanding by publishing high-impact research and reviews in 21st century biochemistry from across the world; studies that go beyond observational work – using in vitro and/or in vivo – approaches are welcomed.

The Biochemical Journal is a hybrid journal, offering the option to publish open access (OA), and is published by Portland Press on behalf of the Biochemical Society. The Biochemical Society is the UK’s largest single-discipline learned society, promoting the advancement of molecular bioscience; Portland Press is the publishing arm of the Biochemical Society, with all profits being returned to the Society for them to carry out their charitable endeavours.

Publishing with us is completely free under a standard license, and the Biochemical Journal does not charge page fees, publication charges or colour fees. If you choose to make your article available under an open access license, there is an article publishing charge, and more information can be found on the journal’s website. Authors at participating institutions can publish open access with no author-facing open access fees, through our transformative Read & Publish offerings. Find out more and see the full list of participating institutions.

Painless publishing:
All papers undergo a rigorous peer review process; however, the Editorial Board is committed to ensuring that, if revisions are recommended, extra experiments not necessary to the paper will not be asked for.
