    Drosophila larval salivary glands of varying Drosophila phosphatidylinositol 5 phosphate 4-kinase (dPIP4K) activity, stained with fluorescent dyes to outline individual cells and their membranes. In the latest issue of Bioscience Reports (volume 39, issue 2), Mathre et al. suggest that the size of larval salivary gland cells is regulated by multiple cell signalling mechanisms, including lipid based second messengers. Discovery of dPIP4K mechanisms in Drosophila may suggest novel therapeutic applications using the human isoform PIP4K in humans.
