The cover of this issue of Bioscience Reports (volume 41, issue 8) shows a scanning electron microscope micrograph of whole blood from a healthy volunteer. Where spike protein was added, spontaneously formed fibrin(ogen) nets (or microclots) were noted. Spike protein in circulation may therefore, in part, contribute to hypercoagulation in COVID-19 positive patients.
