Glomerular staining of synaptopodin, a podocyte protein, in db/H control mice. In this issue of Clinical Science (volume 134, issue 17) Toffoli et al. show that the protein TRAIL (TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) increases the expression of synaptopodin in the db/db mouse, which is a model of diabetic nephropathy. Overall, in this study, TRAIL treatment ameliorated glomerular morphological changes and this was associated with a significant reduction of the TGF-beta1-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in vitro.
