Periodic acid-Schiff staining reveals glomerular lesions in murine models of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, featured by glomerular synechiae, glomerular capillary congestion, collapse and/or obliteration accompanied by hyaline material, mesangial matrix expansion, and podocytic swelling and vacuolization. In their research article, Qiao et al. propose that MC1R-null and wild-type mice are equally protected by melanocortin therapy against proteinuria and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.
