ACE2, a multifunctional protein – from cardiovascular regulation to COVID-19

Twenty years after its discovery, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) has become one of the most studied proteins. Since ACE2 was identified as the SARS-coronavirus 2 receptor, it has held centre stage with already around 3000 peer-reviewed publications in 2020. On this occasion Clinical Science has compiled a themed collection ‘ACE2, a multifunctional protein – from cardiovascular regulation to COVID-19’ with reviews and original papers on the physiological and pathophysiological roles of the multiple known tasks of ACE2 including carboxypeptidase, amino acid transport regulator, and virus receptor functions.
