S1 carbohydrate sulfatases share a conserved fold and mechanism with the whole S1 family but display incredibly tailored interactions to their cognate carbohydrate ligand, to which the labile sulfate is attached. Through understanding these exquisitely specific recognition features we can begin to determine the biological role of the carbohydrate sulfatases and mechanisms to modify their roles in disease states relating to IBD and colon cancer. My work is to understand how small molecules can be utilised to ‘hijack’ this carbohydrate specificity and potentially develop new treatments for chronic bowel disease.
