Permissions
Non-commercial requests
Authors may reproduce an article, in whole or in part, in a thesis or dissertation at no cost providing the original source is attributed.
If you wish to copy and distribute a whole article for teaching purposes, please contact the Copyright Clearance Center who process permission requests on our behalf for the use of our material. You can also request permission via their website – please search by the article DOI as indicated and you will then be prompted to input the specific permission usage that you require.
Commercial requests
For any form of commercial reuse, including requests to use content at sponsored symposia/lectures, sponsored medical education activity, republication of material by non-STM-signatory publishers and any other requests not covered elsewhere on this page, please go to the Copyright Clearance Center, select the journal and follow the steps to obtain the relevant permission.
Sharing and public posting of articles
Portland Press endorses and supports the ‘voluntary principles for article sharing’ compiled by the STM Association.
We encourage the public posting of open access articles and article metadata in scholarly collaboration networks and elsewhere online.
Sharing of subscription/licenced articles within research collaboration groups is also allowed and encouraged as long as such groups are scholars or researchers invited to participate in specific research collaborations. Such groups must:
- Be of the size that is typical for research groups of that discipline;
- Only share articles within and for the purposes of the group.
These groups are also permitted to:
- Allow article sharing between subscribers and non-subscribers within the group;
- Include commercial researchers, subject to publisher policy or appropriate licencing;
- Include members of the wider public participating for the purposes of the group.
