Open access (OA) enables the widest possible dissemination and impact of your work. We provide and favour OA options that remove author charges where possible, to support publication of your work and compliance with funder mandates.
Read & Publish
Corresponding authors based at institutions that have signed a Read & Publish (R&P) agreement will be published OA by default under a CC BY licence with no additional charges to the institution or author. Agreements cover our entire portfolio, including our fully OA journal (Bioscience Reports), and all article types are eligible.

Conditional open access with Subscribe to Open
For the current year’s volume, the content of the journals listed below will be made OA if we meet our threshold for subscription renewal commitments.
- Biochemical Journal
- Clinical Science
- Biochemical Society Transactions
- Essays in Biochemistry
- Emerging Topics in Life Sciences
By 1 March, the OA status of the journals will be announced on this page. Any articles that were published within the volume prior to the decision will be retrospectively made OA, and all subsequent articles in the volume will be made immediately OA. This will be at no charge to authors.
Gold open access via an article publishing charge
Article publishing charges (APCs) for OA are only offered in our fully OA journal (Bioscience Reports) if there is no R&P agreement in place.
APCs are not available in any other journal titles.

Discounts and waivers
Members of the Biochemical Society receive discounted APCs alongside a range of other exclusive benefits. Find out more about tailored membership categories.
To support greater equity in the global research community, we are working to reduce barriers to publishing in our journals. We are partnered with Research4Life, and offer free or discounted Gold OA publication to authors from institutions in lower income countries.
- Authors from the HINARI Group A list can publish OA at no charge.
- Authors from the HINARI Group B list can publish OA with a discount

Green open access
An Author’s Accepted Manuscript may be deposited in institutional or subject-specific repositories without embargo. Immediate Green deposition is supported as a way for authors to achieve funder and institutional compliance across all our journals.
When archiving your Author Accepted Manuscript, please make clear that it is not the final Version of Record, and make sure to include a link to the Version of Record along with attribution to the author and journal.
Funder compliance
The Gold OA options for the final article and the embargo-free Green OA archiving of the accepted manuscript facilitate compliant routes to publication for funders.
As a check that your funder recognises our OA routes, you can either use the Journal Checker Tool or contact our publishing team for any specific queries.
